OLEAN — Five different Canisius women’s basketball players reached double-figures on Wednesday, as a balanced scoring attack helped to defeat St. Bonaventure. The win was first time the Blue and Gold defeated the Bonnies since the 2005-06 season, which also took place at the Reilly Center. With the win Canisius improved to 1-1, while the St. Bonaventure dropped to 1-2 overall.

For the first time since Dec. 13, 2014, the Blue and Gold posted five scorers in double-digits. Senior leader Lauren D’Hont led the attack with 15 points, one shy of her career-best. D’Hont also recorded six rebounds in the win.

The three-point assassins of Maria Welch and Margret Halfdanardottir were next on the scoring list, combining for six treys between the two of them, and each recording 14 points. Saliah Serrette and Sara Hinriksdottir each posted 12 points as well, to round out the top five scorers.

St. Bonaventure was led by Gabby Richmond who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

The Blue and Gold started the game strong, holding St. Bonaventure to just 18 points throughout the first two quarters. Likewise the Griffs offense posted totals of 17 and 15, respectively, ending the first half up 32-18.

A third quarter littered with fouls, got St. Bonaventure into the game, as the squad outscored the Griffs, 20-15, but a last second trey by Welch, gave Canisius momentum heading into the fourth.

The offense didn’t let up in the final stanza either, despite having its lead cut to five by the Bonnies offense with two quick layups in the first minute of play. Out of a timeout however, the Blue and Gold responded, as the team banged back-to-back 3-pointers thanks to Welch and Serrette  to help turn the tide and give the Griffs a 53-42 lead.

Canisius ended the quarter outscoring the Bonnies 27-19, to finish the game up 74-57.

The Griffs next welcome non-conference opponent, Akron, to the Koessler Athletic Center, at 2 p.m. Sunday.
