The Canisius women’s basketball team continues its season for its first road contest of the year, tonight, as the squad faces crosstown rival, St. Bonaventure in Olean at 7 p.m. at the Reilly Center.

While the Blue and Gold excelled in its only exhibition contest of the year earlier in the week, Canisius fell in its season-opener against Northeastern on Sunday. The Huskies bested the Griffs, 83-59 at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs were led offensively by a pair of players as Maria Welch and Margret Halfdanardottir picked up where they left off last season. The duo posted 14 points apiece in the loss. Senior Emily Weber made her first appearance in over a year, returning from injury. The veteran guard redshirted the 2015-16 season. Weber saw 16 minutes of action and went 1-of-2 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe for six points.

The Griffs, who’s offense relies heavily on the three ball, had strong accuracy numbers from long range despite the lower-than-normal attempts on Sunday. Canisius hit on 41.7 percent from beyond the arc, nailing 5-of-12. Leading that charge was sharpshooter, Maria Welch who had two of the five. Defensively, the squad struggled to stop the Northeastern offense, much of which might have been related to the absence of forward Sarah Cooley. Early in the contest Cooley hoisted a three and was injured coming down from the shot. She still managed to get through 18 minutes of the game. A theme for the season, barring injury of course, may turn out to be the depth the Blue and Gold offense has. Because of that, freshman Anna Sweny was the only Canisius freshman to see the court on Sunday, and played 11 minutes, recorded four points, including a trey. Rebounding was an issue last year and in this game the Blue and Gold attempted to curb the trend. The Huskies out rebounded the Griffs 40-31.
