BUFFALO — The Canisius College women’s basketball team suffered a 83-59, season-opening loss to Northeastern on Sunday at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Huskies outscored the Blue and Gold 42-29 in the first half, holding Canisius to just nine points in the second quarter, on the way to the win. With the loss Canisius is now 0-1 overall, while Northeastern improves to 1-1.

Despite cutting the lead to just one point in the first quarter (15-14), the Huskies never trailed in the contest, holding the lead for nearly 38 minutes in the game.

The Canisius defense struggled throughout, as Northeastern shot 49.2 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Canisius offense couldn’t match, posting a 37.5 percentage from the field and 41 percent from long-range.

Rebounding, which was a point of emphasis coming into the year by the Canisius coaching staff, was won by the Huskies who outrebounded the Griffs 40-31.

The Blue and Gold were led offensively by Margret Halfdanardottir and Maria Welch, who both posted 14 points apiece. Sara Hinriksdottir set a career-best in rebounding, coming down with eight boards in the contest, while Tamara Miskovic led the team with three assists.

Northeastern had four players reach double-figures offensively, with Gabby Giacone pacing the team with 18 points. Jess Genco, who set a career-best against Boston University earlier in the week, rebounded from a quiet first half to finish the game with 17 points and nine assists, just missing out on the double-double.

The Griffs gear up for a busy week, as the squad faces St. Bonaventure on the road on Wednesday, and then takes on Akron at home on Nov. 20. Wednesday’s game starts at 7 p.m., while the home matchup against the Zips begins at 2 p.m.
