BUFFALO — The Canisius College women’s basketball team kicks off its 2017-18 schedule on Sunday, as the squad welcomes Northeastern to the Koessler Athletic Center.

The game is slated for 2 p.m. and begins a string of three games played in the first seven days of the season.

The Griffs return 10 letterwinners from last year, including redshirt senior, Emily Weber. Not only does Canisius return a bevy of rostered players from the previous season, the squad also returns three of its top-four scorers from last season. The Blue and Gold had one final tune up opportunity on Wednesday as the squad hosted crosstown foe, Daemen at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Canisius defeated Daemen 80-73, out scoring the Wildcats in both the second and fourth quarters. The Griffs had five players reach double figures in the game with four of the five starters reaching the plateau. Leading the way was 2015-16 MAAC Rookie Team member, Maria Welch who scored 15 points and chipped in four assists and seven rebounds, for the complete effort. Leading the way on the glass was junior Saliah Serrette, who was inserted into the starting lineup on Weds., and appears to be poised to make her first start on Sunday. Serrette came down with eight boards and scored 12 points, just missing out on the double-double. Newcomer Anna Sweny saw the floor and was the only freshman to get into the game, as she came away with three points and four rebounds, to go along with two assists in her first stint of action. The game was a tale of two runs as the Blue and Gold went on a 15-0 run in the final five minutes of the second quarter, while another run (13-6) in the final five minutes of the fourth frame helped give the Griffs the victory. For the first time since the 2014-15 MAAC tournament, Emily Weber saw action, following a season-ending injury.

The Griffs  finished the 2015-16 regular season with a 13-17 record, and an 8-12 conference mark.

Canisius is 23-13 (dating back to when location data was accessible) in its games opening up at the Koessler Athletic Center, including three of its last five.
