Geographically speaking, New York’s 23rd Congressional District is the second largest in the state. It covers the entirety of nine counties — Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Chemung, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins and Yates — and part of two more — Ontario and Tioga.

Republican incumbent Congressman Tom Reed nearly ran the table on them, winning them all but Tompkins with an overall vote total of 149,439. His opponent, John Plumb took 108,163 votes.

Although the race was hotly contested with a significant amount of money spent on advertising by both candidates, it wasn’t considered by either party to be “in play.” In the end, it wasn’t.
