The Canisius College hockey team will travel to State College, Pa. for a weekend tilt against No. 19 Penn State tonight and Saturday. Both games in Pegula Ice Arena are set to start at 7:05 p.m. The Griffs are 2-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Atlantic Hockey play after a 6-3 win and 2-2 overtime tie this last weekend vs. Robert Morris.

Canisius currently ranks second in the Atlantic Hockey Conference with a 1-0-1 record in league play, going 2-3-0 overall. The Griffs are led offensively by sophomore Felix Chamberland and juinor Ryan Schmelzer, who are tied with a team-high five points. Chamberland is currently tied for third in nation in power-play goals, with three. Senior goaltender Charles Williams owns a 2-1-1 overall record and is tied for 14th in the nation in save percentage at .927. The Blue and Gold rank 11th in the country in power-play percentage at 22.6 percent (7-for-31).

The Golden Griffins began Atlantic Hockey play last weekend going 1-0-1 against Robert Morris at KeyBank Rink at HARBORCENTER. The Griffs rode a five power-play goal performance, that included a power-play hat trick from Chamberland, to a 6-3 victory over the Colonials on Friday night. Canisius scored the second most power-play goals in program history in the victory, with the Griffs tallying six power-play goals against Bentley on Nov. 12, 2005. The Blue and Gold played to a 2-2 overtime tie on Saturday night, with Schmelzer adding his first two goals of the season. Williams made 59 saves on the weekend, including 32 in game two  of the weekend tilt.

With his three power-play goal performance Oct. 21, sophomore Felix Chamberland became the second Canisius player in program history to record a power-play hat trick. Former Griff Carl Hudson also had three goals on the power play at Sacred Heart Jan. 23, 2010. Chamberland is just the 18th player in NCAA Division I history to record a power-play hat trick.

Chamberland was named Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week, announced by the conference Tuesday. Along with Chamberland, senior Charles Williams was named Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the Week after going 1-0-1 in the weekend series, owning a .922 save percentage to go with 59 saves. Chamberland, who added an assist on Saturday, has registered four points in six games this season. In 43 career contests, the Quebec City, Quebec native has totaled 18 points with nine goals and nine assists. Williams anchored the Griffs in the 6-3 win versus the Colonials with 27 saves, while making 32 saves in Saturday’s 2-2 tie. In four games during his senior season, the Canton, Mich. native has posted a 2-1-1 record, to go along with a 2.43 goals against average and a .927 save percentage.

Canisius is 2-1-1 with senior goaltender Charles Williams between the pipes. The fifth-year transfer led the Griffs to a series win against Robert Morris for the first time in program history this past weekend, making 59 saves to go along with a .922 save percentage. Williams currently ranks 14th in the nation in save percentage at .927 overall, with his only loss coming to defending national champion North Dakota.
