BUFFALO — Student-Athletes, coaches and staff from The University at Buffalo participated in the annual Take Back the Night event on UB’s Amherst campus on Wednesday. This year’s theme was “Shatter the Silence. Stop the Violence.”

The event began with the traditional night time march and concluded with a keynote by nationally recognized rape counselor and awareness advocate Katie Koestner.

Koestner’s own experience with date rape as a college freshman propelled her into an advocacy role to educate other women and men about the realities of date rape. After being featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1991 for a feature story about date rape, she quickly became one of the most sought after speakers in the field, combining solid practical knowledge with personal experience. Today she works as an author, activist, rape counselor and awareness advocate and is the Executive Director of the TBTN Foundation.

UB student-athletes also volunteered throughout the day stuffing back packs for UB’s Got Your Back Campaign. It’s a yearlong project to collect comfort kits for victims and survivors of sexual assault and interpersonal violence who came to shelters and centers across New York State.
