The Canisius cross country teams excelled at the Alumni Classic on Saturday afternoon, as the men’s team placed first overall and the women’s team took second, at Delaware Park. Both teams had runners place in the top five, as women’s standout, Siobhan Quinn won the individual women’s title.

On the men’s side, the Blue and Gold took top honors in the division I team score, placing four runners in the top seven spots. Brennan Root was the fastest Griffs’ entrant, with a time of 25:02.9.  Following Root was Galen Snyder (25:40.9) who placed fourth, Xavier Sauvageau (25:56.0) who placed sixth and Anthony Belfatto (26:10.1) who came in seventh.

Also running for the Griffs was A.J. Stuver (26:15.7), Gustavo Gonzalez (26:34.2) and Josh Sopchak (26:40.1).

Detroit Mercy’s Ben Kendell took the invidiaul title with a time of 24:27.7, while Saint Francis (Pa.) (63), Detroit Mercy (70), Buffalo (72), and Niagara (137) rounded out the rest of the standings.

On the women’s side,  Quinn was once again the top finisher in a race this season, as she crossed the line with a time of 17:54.6

Canisius had three runners place in the top 10, as Carlin Sullivan came in third with a time of 18:34.9, and Macey Walker placed third with a time of 18:54.1.

As a team the Blue and Gold finished just five points back of of Saint Francis with 49 points, while Detriot Mercy (72), Youngstown State (86), Buffalo (131) Robert Morris (153) and Niagara (173) rounded out the standings.

Canisius now turns its attention to the biggest price in the cross country season, the MAAC Championship. The conference championship takes place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., this year, and is salted for Oct. 29.
