WINTHROP, Mass. – After scoring three points in two games to open the 2016-17 season last weekend, Niagara freshman forward Kris Spriggs was named the Travel Team USA Rookie of the Week by Atlantic Hockey, announced on Tuesday.

With his three points last weekend, Spriggs is tied with Niagara teammate Noah Delmas for the Atlantic Hockey rookie scoring lead. The Edmonton, Alberta native is tied for fifth in the conference with 10 shots on goal and tied for tenth in the conference with a plus-2 rating.

Spriggs scored the first point of his Niagara career in his collegiate debut on Oct. 7, setting up Larry Smith for the Purple Eagles’ first goal of the season. On Oct. 8, Spriggs scored one goal and one assist and led all skaters in the game with nine shots on goal. With Niagara trailing 3-2 in the second period, Spriggs assisted on Johnny Curran’s game-tying goal, and he scored the go-ahead goal with 6:45 to play in regulation.

The Purple Eagles return to game action on Oct. 18 in a 7:05 p.m. contest at Mercyhurst. From there, Niagara opens its non-conference schedule on Oct. 21 and 22 against the RPI Engineers and Union Dutchmen.
