NIAGARA UNIV. — Victoria Rampado, Jamie Sherburne and Kaylee Stroemple have been named captains of the Niagara women’s basketball team for the 2016-17 season.

“It is with great pride and enthusiasm that we announce our captains for the 2016-17 season,” said Purple Eagles head coach Jada Pierce. “Victoria and Kaylee did a great job last year as first-time captains; their toughness and work ethic was contagious. Victoria was able to lead in a different way, being sidelined due to injury, which we feel will only help her more now that she is back on the court. Kaylee displayed her leadership in every way and gained a lot of respect from her teammates. Jamie was in a leadership role as our starting point guard last season and we felt she was ready to officially have the title of captain. She is a natural leader that understands how to lead by example, but also bring her teammates along. These captains will continue to lead our women’s basketball program in a way that we can be proud of.”

Rampado, a redshirt junior forward, appeared in three games during the 2015-16 season, before missing the remainder of the year due to a shoulder injury. In her three games played, Rampado averaged 13.3 points per game and 8.0 rebounds per game. She was named to both College Sports Madness’ Preseason All-MAAC First Team and the Preseason All-MAAC First Team. Rampado was also named to the 2016-17 Preseason All-Big 4 First Team.

Sherburne, a junior guard, started in 28 games in 2015-16. She led Niagara in assists, averaging 3.8 per game. She set multiple career-highs over the course of the season, including career-highs in assists (seven), points (12) and rebounds (six). She finished the season averaging 5.6 points per game and 2.3 rebounds per game.

Junior forward Stroemple led the Purple Eagles in scoring during the 2015-16 season, averaging 12.1 points per game, which ranker her eighth in the MAAC. She also brought down 6.9 rebounds per game; her 214 total rebounds were the tenth-most in the MAAC. Stroemple started in all 31 games and led the MAAC in minutes played, averaging 38.6 minutes per game. She recorded a career-high five double-doubles over the course of the season. Stroemple was named to the 2016-17 Preseason All-Big 4 Second Team.

The Purple Eagles open the 2016-17 season on Nov. 11 when they host Little 3 rival St. Bonaventure at 5 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
