Former Canisius men’s lacrosse player Dan Coates ‘11 is one of 26 players named to the Team Canada roster for a pair of exhibition games which will be played in Denver, Colo., the Canadian Lacrosse Association announced today. Of the 26 players on the roster, Coates is one of seven players who earned a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2014 FIL Men’s World Lacrosse Championship.

The Canadian men’s field lacrosse national team, led by Canisius head coach Randy Mearns, is set to play exhibition games against Denver and Air Force, Oct. 22-23, respectively. The pair of games will be used by Team Canada as the organization plans for the 2018 FIL Men’s World Lacrosse Championship, which will be held in Manchester, England.

Considered one of the top defensemen in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) as a member of the Colorado Mammoth, Coates was named the Mammoth’s team captain in Dec. 2015. The St. Catharines, Ontario native was the eighth overall pick by Colorado in the 2011 NLL Entry Draft. At Canisius, Coates played 50 career games as a Golden Griffin and became the first defensemen in program history to earn All-MAAC First-Team honors. He currently ranks fourth in Canisius history with his 40 career caused turnovers, highlighted by his career-best 11 caused turnovers in 2011.
