Canisius senior forward Phil Valenti and junior guard Kassius Robertson were named to the 2016-17 Preseason All-Big 4 Basketball Teams, which were announced Wednesday at Big 4 Basketball Media Day at KeyBank Center. Valenti earned Preseason All-Big 4 First-Team honors, while Robertson was voted to the second team. The Preseason All-Big 4 Teams are chosen by media and athletic communications staffs that cover the four Western New York Division I basketball programs.

Valenti, who earned Preseason All-Big 4 Second Team honors in 2014-15, averaged 14.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last year. The Victor, New York native scored in double-figures 24 times last year, highlighted by his career-high 33 points in the Golden Griffins’ MAAC Tournament win over Niagara. He ranked 12th in the MAAC in field goal percentage at 46.4 percent, and he finished his junior campaign ranked second among MAAC frontcourt players with 2.0 assists per outing.

Valenti was joined on the Preseason All-Big 4 First-Team by Blake Hamilton and C.J. Massinburg from Buffalo, Matt Scott from Niagara and Jaylen Adams from St. Bonaventure. Adams was also named the 2016-17 Preseason Big 4 Player of the Year.

Robertson earned second team accolades after he averaged 14.1 points per game in 2015-16. A native of Toronto, Robertson scored in double-figures 26 times and ended the year ranked second in the MAAC with 86 3-point field goals made. He ranked 78th nationally in 3-pointers per game with 2.61 per outing, and his 40.4 percent success rate from behind the arc was fifth-best in the MAAC and 58th best in the nation.

Robertson was joined on the second team by Willie Connor and Nick Perkins from Buffalo and Denzel Gregg and Idris Taqqee from St. Bonaventure.

Canisius will officially open the 113th season in school history on Sunday, Nov. 13, when the team travels to play at Kentucky. The Blue and Gold is set to host UT Martin Nov. 21 for the 2016-17 home opener.
