Canisius head hockey coach Dave Smith has joined a distinguished group of community leaders in Western New York who will be participating in Real Men Wear Pink, a new initiative of the American Cancer Society that engages men in the fight against breast cancer.

Real Men Wear Pink participants have committed to wearing pink throughout the month of October while raising donations to support the American Cancer Society in its battle against breast cancer. Smith will be wearing pink for all three home games through the month of October. On Oct. 22, Canisius will “pink-out” KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER when the Golden Griffins play host to Robert Morris.

“I have a passion to end breast cancer and the American Cancer Society shares that passion,” Smith said. “I am in a position to make a difference within my community, and I believe I have an opportunity and an obligation to do so. I know that by raising funds and awareness through the Real Men Wear Pink campaign, we can help create a world free from the pain and suffering of breast cancer.”

Anyone who makes a donation of $100 or more to Smith’s campaign will receive four tickets to the Oct. 22 Canisius hockey game against Robert Morris. To support to Smith’s Real Men Wear Pink fundraising campaign, click here.

This year, approximately 240,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Often, the primary caregivers assisting these women are husbands, brothers, fathers and sons. In addition, 2,600 men will also be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and will fight their own battles. The American Cancer Society is determined to save lives from breast cancer by promoting early detection and prevention, funding groundbreaking research, and giving patients support wherever and whenever they need it.

Canisius’ College’s Against Cancer group will be decorating the KeyBank Rink in HARBORCENTER on Oct. 22. All proceeds from the “Chuck-a-Puck” promotion that night will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
