Congressman Chris Collins joined the Miller family to formally dedicate the Bergen Post Office and unveil a memorial plaque in his name.
“Barry Miller was a pillar of the Bergen community and someone who spent his entire life serving others,” said Congressman Collins. “The ‘Barry Miller Post Office’ will keep his memory forever ingrained in Bergen. I want to thank the members of the Bergen community for showing their support today.”
“Barry Miller was deeply involved in the Bergen community and his passion showed in his dedication to service and answering the call of those in danger,” added Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “Today, we collectively remember and honor this extraordinary and generous New Yorker. This designation is a fitting tribute for a hometown hero in the community he held near and dear.”
“It is an honor to have the legacy of Barry Miller, and the Miller name, forever associated with the Bergen Post Office,” said Ronald Coons, Manager of Post Office Operations.
“Our family finds it difficult to adequately express our appreciation for this great honor,” said the Miller Family. “We are particularly grateful because it will be a lasting memorial for Barry. We love you, son.”
Barry Miller, a lifelong Bergen resident, was a member of the Bergen Volunteer Fire Department for 31 years, including ten as an Assistant EMS Chief, before he was tragically killed in the line of duty on September 23, 2015. In addition to his service with the Bergen Volunteer Fire Department, Barry was the Genesee County Coroner, a member of the Bergen Town Board, and owner of Miller’s Millworks in Bergen and the Beaver River Lodge in the Adirondacks.
Shortly after Mr. Miller’s passing, Congressman Collins introduced legislation to rename the currently unnamed post office located at 15 Rochester Street, Bergen, New York as the “Barry Miller Post Office.” On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, the House of Representatives voted to pass this legislation with unanimous consent. Senator Gillibrand introduced companion legislation in the Senate, which unanimously passed on July 7, 2016. On Friday, July 15, 2016, the President signed it into law.
