BUFFALO — With the NFL season kicking off in earnest this weekend, six former University at Buffalo football players find themselves on NFL rosters. James Starks and Jacob Schum are in Green Bay, Khalil Mack is in Oakland and Steven Means is in Philadelphia. In addition, Branden Oliver and Josh Thomas are on the injured reserve list for the Chargers and Cowboys, respectively.

Starks has the longest career of the current crop of Bulls in the NFL — entering his seventh season as a running back for the Packers. He burst onto the scene late in his rookie season of 2010. The Niagara Falls native helped lead Green Bay to a Super Bowl title that season. He has rushed for 2,361 yards and nine touchdowns in 67 career games. Starks is coming off his most productive season, with 601 rushing yards, 392 receiving yards and five total touchdowns in 2015.

Mack, a former All-American linebacker for the Bulls, is making the Raiders glad they picked him fifth overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. After a strong rookie campaign, Mack was even better in 2015. Playing both linebacker and defensive end, he ranked second in the NFL in sacks with 15. He became the first player in NFL history to be named an Associated Press first-team All-Pro at two different positions. He was also the first player from UB ever elected to play in the Pro Bowl.

After a strong preseason, Means was signed to the Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster. The Buffalo native is entering his fourth season in the NFL after being selecting in the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013. After playing two seasons in Tampa, Means also spent time in Baltimore and Houston.

After spending 2015 as Tampa Bay’s starting punter, Schum was signed by Green Bay in August to be the Packers starter. Last season, he averaged 42.2 yards per punt and had 15 downed inside the 20-yard line.

Oliver, who led the Chargers in rushing in 2014, has become a fan favorite in San Diego. Unfortunately, UB’s all-time leading rusher has had to battle injuries lately. After missing eight games last season with a toe injury, Oliver suffered an achilles injury during the preseason that will keep him out for the year. He has amassed over 1,000 yards of total offense and has scored four touchdowns in his career.

Thomas is the journeyman of the group. Originally drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2011, Thomas has spent time with seven different teams since, including the Panthers, Seahawks, Jets, Lions, Vikings and Colts. He signed with the Cowboys in the offseason, but suffered a thumb injury in a preseason game and was placed on injured reserve. He has 70 career tackles, an interception and 13 passes defended over his career.
