LANCASTER — It would seem at least once a week, some municipal police department or another is reminding residents to lock their cars, following a string of thefts from unlocked cars in that jurisdiction. This week, it’s Lancaster’s turn.

The Lancaster Police Department posted to its Facebook this morning that “Over the past several days, our officers have taken multiple reports of Village of Lancaster residents’ vehicles being entered and money or property being stolen. Almost all of these incidents occurred overnight and involved vehicles that had been left unlocked.”

The post goes on to offer tips:

  • Remember to remove all valuables from your vehicles or put them out of sight (in the truck or a locked compartment). Several of the victims only reported loose change being taken, while others had hundreds of dollars stolen.
  • Make sure that your vehicle is locked and the windows are up.
  • Try to park in a well-lit area.
  • Be watchful for suspicious persons or activity in your neighborhood, especially near vehicles and after dark.
  • If you notice any suspicious persons or activity, contact Lancaster Police IMMEDIATELY at 683-2800, or dial 911 for an emergency.

With the exception of the phone number to call, these tips are appropriate for everyone in every community — not just Lancaster.
