Stony Brook junior Vince Erdei’s goal in the game’s 10th minute proved to be enough for the visiting Seawolves, as Stony Brook posted a 1-0 victory over Canisius men’s soccer Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. Stony Brook moved its record to 2-2-0 with the win, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-3-0 with the loss.

Canisius controlled play for much of the afternoon, as the Blue and Gold ended the contest with a 21-11 advantage in shots, a 7-4 margin in shots on goal and an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks. Stony Brook goalkeeper Tom McMahon was up to the task however, as he earned the victory after registering seven saves.

Erdei was able to give Stony Brook a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute after he redirected a loose ball in the box into the back of the goal. Canisius had a number of chances to tie the game, including one with less than 10 minutes left to play, but junior Mathew Santos’ shot from 12-yards out bounced off the left goal post.

Canisius goalkeeper Marco Trivellato made three saves in the losing effort for Canisius.

Canisius Soccer Coach McGrane said, “I thought we played well, and we possessed the ball well. You look at the stats and we had 21 shots to their 11, so you think that normally you would not be on the wrong side of the result. They had one good chance in the game and they scored it. We had a number of good chances and we did not score, and that’s the way you lose.”

“If we keep playing well, I think the results will start falling our way,” the coach added. “I don’t want to make a big deal out of it, but guys can do it in practice, that’s not enough. Doing it in practice doesn’t win us games. I challenged the boys at the end of the game. Big players need to step up in big games. We need guys who can take responsibility and come through for this team.”

Canisius will return to action at 5 p.m. Friday, when the team plays Bucknell in the first game of the Duquesne Invitational.
