BUFFALO — The Canisius men’s and women’s cross country teams cruised to a sweep of the 48th annual Little Three Championship on Friday night, as the squad bested rivals Niagara and St. Bonaventure at Delaware Park.
Canisius was well represented at the top portion of the standings with both the men’s and women’s teams posting a myriad of top-10 times. Canisius’ men’s squad had seven runners filter through the top seven spots, while the women’s team posted eight runners in the top-eight.
Brennan Root and Siobhan Quinn took their respective races with impressive times. Root finished the 5k with a time of 15:34, while Quinn clocked in with a time of 18:10.7.
Quinn was followed by Carlin Sullivan who placed second (18:52.7), while Anna Phillips (19:06.1), Justyna Wilkinson (19:28.2), Aileen Doyle (19.28.4), Macey Walker (19:33.3), Haylie Virginia (19:43) and Haley Keene (19:45.6), rounded out the top eight spots.
For the men, freshman Donovan Glavin (15.36.1) placed second with Xavier Sauvageau (15:46.8) , Henry Burton (16:08.8), Josh Sopchak (16.09.3), Nicholas Neamtu (16:09.6) and A.J. Stuver (16:16.7) rounded out the top seven spots for the Blue and Gold.
It’s the third-straight year that the Griffs women’s team took top honors, while it’s the 10th straight time the men’s squad defeated the Purple Eagles and Bonnies.
Both teams bested the field with a team score of 15 on each side. In the men’s standings Niagara came second with 54 points while St. Bonaventure had 74. Meanwhile on the women’s side St. Bonaventure placed second with 60 points with the Purple Eagles taking third with 65.
The Griffs will be back in action later in the month as the team’s top-15 runners will compete at the National Catholic Championships hosted by Notre Dame, while the rest of the team will take part at the UB Stampede held at Beaver Island State Park in Grand Island, N.Y. Both those meets take place on Sept. 16.
