ANGELICA — A 27-year-old Amsterdam man was charged Monday with violating an order of protection, obstruction of governmental administration and endangering the welfare of a child. At the same time, a 28-year-old Amsterdam woman was charged with obstruction and endangering the welfare of a child.
According to New York State Police, Troopers stopped Alysha A. Karl on I-86 for speeding around 4:15 p.m. Monday. She was found to be driving without a license and wanted on an active warrant out of Amsterdam. Troopers then checked the ID of Karl’s passenger, John D. Kerr, who was found to have an order of protection placed against him. The vehicle also had five children under the age of 10. One of the children in the vehicle was protected by the order of protection placed against Kerr.
Troopers say Karl and Kerr both provided false names for the children in an effort to hide the children’s identity, leading to the obstruction charges and endangerment charges for both. Karl was also issued tickets for speeding and not possessing a valid license.
Allegany County Child Protective Services came to remove the children. Montgomery County CPS told Troopers they believed that the pair were attempting to flee Montgomery County because of an active CPS investigation.
Both Kerr and Karl were processed at SP Amity and arraigned in the Town of Friendship. Both were remanded to the Allegany County Jail — Kerr on $2,000 bail and Karl on $5,000 bail — and both are slated to to reappear in the Town of Angelica Court.
