ALBANY — The New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for July 2016 showing an increase in jobs and a decrease in unemployment in both the Buffalo-Niagara and Rochester job markets.

From July 2015 to July 2016, the State’s private sector job count increased by 126,900. In July 2016, the number of private sector jobs in the State was 7,951,900, an all-time high. The State’s private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers, which is conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In addition, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.7% in July 2016.

Buffalo-Niagara Falls shows a 4.9 percent unemployment rate for July, compared to 5.7 percent in July of 2015. Rochester, meanwhile, showed a 4.7 percent unemployment rate, down from 5.3 percent a year ago.
