CANANDAIGUA — U.S. Rep. Chris Collins has recognizing United States Army Veteran, Ralph Calabrese as New York’s 27th Congressional District’s ‘Veteran of the Month’ for August.

The ‘Veteran of the Month’ is a new program established by Congressman Collins’ office to recognize the dedication and service of NY-27’s veterans.

“I was honored to have an opportunity to meet with Mr. Calabrese and hear about his service in the United States Army and his work with the Canandaigua VA,” said Congressman Collins. “His continued advocacy on behalf of the countless number of Western New York veterans who turn to the Canandaigua VA Medical Center for healthcare shows a commitment to our country that is unbound. My office will continue to recognize a local ‘Veteran of the Month’ as a small thank you to the thousands of Western New York veterans who have selflessly served our country.”

Ralph Calabrese served in the United States Army for two years within the 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. His courageous service was recognized with a number of decorations, including a Bronze Service Star, the Korean Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. In the 1990’s, when the Canandaigua VA Medical Center was on the verge of being closed by the Federal Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Ralph organized a grassroots letter-writing initiative that gathered over 100,000 submissions from members of the community in support of keeping its operations ongoing. Ralph is also a member of the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame. Congressman Collins was joined by Ralph’s family, fellow veterans, and a number of Canandaigua residents at a ceremony where Ralph was presented with a Congressional Certificate of Commendation and a flag flown over the United States Capitol Building. Mr. Calabrese was presented this recognition on Saturday, August 20, 2016.
