LOCKPORT — Smoke from the commercial fire in Lockport Wednesday night was visible from miles away — reportedly as far away as Cheektowaga and Somerset.

But views up close were even more spectacular, as these photos from Lockport’s Al Gritzmacher show.

The smoke from the fire, which was first reported around 6:30 p.m., was immediately black and filled the sky.

The dark plumes made it look like night to those in the area of Stevens and Ohio streets. Here Firefighters battle the blaze early on from a ladder truck.

On the ground, the darkness was even more pervasive.

Lockport’s Police Chief Mike Niethe was at the scene early.

Large crowds made their way to the area of the fire to watch. Here’s a crowd on Webb Street just before being asked to move further away from the fire. Eventually, the entire neighborhood was evacuated.

Cambria Vol. Fire Co. shows up to assist. They were one of 14 departments assisting the Lockport Fire Department.

There were water pressure issues with fire hydrants near the blaze. Several tanker trucks ended up getting water straight from the Erie Canal.
