BUFFALO — The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s — the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research — will return to Delaware Park on Sept. 17.

On-line registration is available now at alz.org/WNY. On-site registration and check-in will be available from 9-10 a.m. Sept. 17 at Delaware Park in the area behind the Buffalo Zoo with a brief opening ceremony to launch the Walk at 10. All registered participants will also enjoy free admission to the Buffalo Zoo after the event, when several popular food trucks will also offer food for purchase.

In all, there are actually six such Walks organized by the local Association Chapter in Western New York. The other Walks are planned in Olean, Batavia, Dunkirk, Lewiston and Warsaw throughout the months of September and October.

The Walks are a vital source of funding for local services and resources, and for funding research into a disease that kills more people than breast and prostate cancers combined, and touches almost a quarter of a million people across the greater Buffalo-Niagara region.

Participants raise funds through various means including asking family, friends and co-workers for support, donating the proceeds for creative fundraisers such as “Casual for a Cause” days in the workplace and lemonade stands.

Eleven-year-old Jake Oberg has been taking part since before he could walk. “My grandpa died of
Alzheimer’s…and I walk with my mom because I don’t think anyone else should lose their grandpa to this disease.” Jake has raised more than $7,000 with a lemonade stand and baked goods sale to support his Walk team, which has also earned him some special incentives.
