ROCHESTER — The Lehigh Valley IronPigs scored early and blanked the Red Wings 3-0 Saturday night at Frontier Field. The loss dropped the Wings four games behind the IronPigs in the race for the wild card playoff spot.

Lehigh Valley struck first, with three runs in the second inning. Darin Ruf led off the frame with a home run to left off Nick Greenwood. Darnell Sweeney recorded the second RBI with a single that scored Andrew Knapp. Jesmuel Valentin followed with a successful squeeze bunt, scoring Cameron Perkins to make it 3-0.

After managing just one hit in the first four innings against Lehigh Valley starter David Buchanan, the Wings had Darin Mastroianni and Wilfredo Tovar on the corners with two outs in the fifth, but John Ryan Murphy grounded to second to end the frame.

Greenwood took the mound in the top of the eighth inning, having kept the IronPigs in check after the three-run second inning. He allowed a one-out bloop single to J.P. Crawford, and Sean Burnett took over for Greenwood on the mound. Greenwood worked 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with three walks and a strikeout. Greenwood threw 80 pitches, 49 for strikes in his longest outing with the Wings this season.

Buchanan pitched seven scoreless innings, giving up just four hits. He did not walk a batter, struck out six, and threw 104 pitches – 72 for strikes. Michael Mariot took over for Buchanan in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Luis Garcia
