BUFFALO — Chicken wings are popular in Western New York all year round. And they’re increasingly popular across the country. There should be a holiday or something. In fact there is — kind of.

Chicken Wing Day, celebrated each July 29, originated in 1977 by Buffalo Mayor Stan Makowski. It’s now celebrated nationwide with many restaurants having specials for the day.

Wing King Drew Cerza is just one of the tens of thousands who will no-doubt imbibe in wings today, possibly with blue cheese — and maybe even some carrots on the side.

Reached this afternoon, Cerza, who created the National Buffalo Wing Festival in 2002 to honor the mighty wing, confirmed he’ll celebrate tonight by eating wings, of course. “But I have chicken wings a lot, so that’s not unusual.”

Cerza, a s self-appointed ambassador of Buffalo’s most famous delicacy, said it’s “nice for chicken wings to be recognized. … It’s probably the most popular menu item across the country now.”

The National Buffalo Wing Festival takes place Sept. 3 and 4 at Coca-Cola Field.
