Buffalo Bisons All-Star DH Jesus Montero has been chosen by the International League to compete in the 2016 Harris Teeter & Tide+ Triple-A Home Run Derby, presented by Clariant, on Monday, July 11 at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, NC. Montero will be joined by two other IL All-Stars and three Pacific Coast League Stars to compete for the Triple-A HR Championship Belt.

Montero is the ninth Bisons’ All-Star to compete in the annual event that precedes the Triple-A All-Star Game on July 13. The last two Bisons’ sluggers to compete won the title: 3B Andy Marte in 2006 at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH and DH Valentino Pascucci in 2012 in front of the hometown fans at Coca-Cola Field.

Montero leads the Bisons with nine home runs this season and is one of the International League’s top hitters in 2016. The veteran leads the circuit with 97 hits and ranks 3rd in the IL in average (.312) and total bases (146) and 5th in RBI (48). Montero has slugged 120 home runs in his minor league career with 28 more while playing with the New York Yankees (2011) and the Seattle Mariners (2012-2015).

Past Bisons HR Derby participants also include Ernie Young (2004, 2005), Bill Selby (2000), Luis Lopez (1995), Rich Aude (1994) and Tom Prince (1988).

Since opening in 2014, Charlotte’s BB&T Ballpark has seen more home runs than any other park in the International League. The other participants are Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s Aaron Judge, Pawtucket’s Chris Marrero, Oklahoma City’s Rob Segedin, Las Vegas’ Travis Taijeron and Reno’s Kyle Jensen.
