LEWISTON — A 56-year-old Ohio man was charged Saturday with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon after being refused entry to Canada with a handgun.

According to New York State Police, police were called to the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge by border officials around noon after denying Wilfredo Cortes of Loraine, Ohio entry.

Police say he was charged because he does not have a New York State pistol permit. Cortes posted $500 bail and was released to appear in the Town of Lewiston court at a later date.
