BUFFALO — A 23-year-old Yonkers man accused of assaulting a Buffalo State student with a box cutter in September was convicted following a mere 12 minutes of deliberation by a State Supreme Court jury.

Mohamed Kaba was found guilty of second-degree assault following the three-day trial and faces a maximum of seven years in prison when he is sentenced on July 8.

According to Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Flaherty, Jr., on Sept. 7, Kaba started a fistfight with the victim outside the STAC (Student Apartment Complex) building on the Buffalo State campus and pulled out a box cutter slashing 23-year-old Tyrell Ganey from  St. Albans at least five times.

The fight stemmed from an altercation between the defendant and the victim a few days earlier at an off-campus party. Kaba has since been expelled from the college. The victim, who has since graduated, was left with numerous scars on his body.
