TOWN OF TONAWANDA — A 49-year-old man was charged Saturday with the murder of a Town of Tonawanda woman.
Town of Tonawanda Police Detectives, assisted by the City of Olean Police Department, Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police, arrested John M. Avent, age 49 of no permanent address, for the murder Roberta A. Rybinski.
Rybinski’s body was discovered on the evening of March 8 in her Newell Avenue apartment.
The arrest was the result of an extensive criminal investigation that involved interviewing dozens of witnesses, the forensic analysis of physical evidence, and consultation with the Erie County District Attorney’s office.
Avent was arraigned Sunday morning before Town Justice J. Mark Gruber and is currently being held without bail at the Erie County Holding Center. Avent is due back in town court for a preliminary hearing on Thursday.
