ROCHESTER – A $9.9 million project to improve pavement and safety conditions on Interstate 590 in  is set to begin on April 4. Work will take place between the Interstate 390 interchange in the town of Brighton and Highland Avenue (Exit 4) in the city of Rochester.

“Interstate 590 is a key commuter route in Monroe County and this project will not only improve the ride for motorists, but it will make critical safety upgrades as well,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

The project includes the milling and resurfacing of the mainline, as well as each of the interchange ramps, including those at Highland Avenue (Exit 4), Elmwood Avenue (Exit 3), Monroe Avenue (Exits 2, 2A and 2B,) Winton Road (Exit 1) and the interchange at I-390. New steel guide railing will be installed in the median between Winton Road and the existing railing system near Monroe Avenue. Additional guide rail will be upgraded as necessary.

Repairs and maintenance treatments will also be made to several bridge decks, existing overhead signs and the drainage system within the project limits. The operation and safety of the ramp from I-490 east to Route 590 north will also be improved with a grinding technique which enhances the texture of the bridge deck and provides better traction for motorists.

Some initial work was able to start last fall, taking advantage of the mild weather conditions. The project is scheduled for completion this fall.

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew J. Driscoll said, “Approximately 85,000 vehicles travel this section of Interstate 590 daily, making these improvements important to mobility throughout the region.”

State Sen. Joseph Robach said, “The I-390/I-590 Interchange is an important commuter route for so many Monroe County residents, providing access to many of our area’s largest employers, universities and colleges, health care facilities and retail corridors. This investment will improve driving safety for residents and visitors of Monroe County while upgrading our region’s transportation infrastructure.”

Assembly Majority Leader Joseph D. Morelle said, “This targeted, ongoing investment will strengthen and ensure the long-term vitality of our community’s transportation system, which is essential to the success of our economic resurgence.”

Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo added, “Monroe County residents rely on the Interstate 590 daily, and it serves as a vital artery in our community for families and businesses alike. The repaving project not only helps maintain the reliability of the road but includes upgrades that improve overall safety. I applaud the New York State Department of Transportation for its commitment to this project which, in addition to the infrastructure improvement, is an investment that will help sustain the economic vitality of our community.”

Rochester Mayor Lovely A. Warren said, “The maintenance of our roads and bridges helps keep Rochester accessible and competitive with other cities, which plays a critical role in our efforts to create more jobs, safer, more vibrant neighborhoods and improve educational opportunities for all of our citizens.”

The construction contractor for the project is Sealand Contractors, of Rush, Monroe County.
