Black Birders Week Bird Walk at Reinstein Woods
May 30, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Come and celebrate diversity in outdoor spaces on a beginner bird walk with Naturalist Marcus Rosten and Black Girls Hike Buffalo for #BlackBirdersWeek at Reinstein Woods!
We will cover the basics of bird watching and head out to see what species we can find migrating through or beginning to nest on the preserve. Binoculars will be avaible to borrow for those who need them.
#BlackBirdersWeek is a grassroots initiative that aims to highlight and celebrate Black birders, scientists, and nature enthusiasts. It was first organized as a primarily virtual event in 2020 in response to an incident involving a Black birder, Christian Cooper, who was birdwatching in Central Park in New York City and encountered racial discrimination.
Black Birders Week works to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the fields of birding, wildlife conservation, and outdoor recreation. The primary goals of the week are to increase the visibility of Black individuals in these fields and inspire more Black individuals to pursue careers or hobbies related to birding, ecology, and environmental science.
