BUFFALO, NY –Madison Lucas (Oakdale, PA/West Allegheny) pitched a complete-game shutout in game one, and and Jenna Wlostowski had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the sixth inning of game two to lead the Buffalo State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Brockport on Friday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BENGAL BOX SCORES

  • Lucas scattered six hits while striking out four batters for her eighth victory of the season.
  • Sydney Bielicki (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Oriana Castello (Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) each went 3-for-6 with a double.
  • Sarah Congelosi (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central) had two triples and drove in a run in game one.
  • Erin Paolilli (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) went 2-for-3 with two walks and one RBI.
  • Kaitlyn Schnitzer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) recorded her sixth win of the year in game two, allowing one earned run and striking out four in a complete game.

GAME 1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Buffalo State struck first on an RBI single by Paolilli in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Lucas allowed just one hit over the first four innings.
  • After Abigail Kruse (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) doubled to lead off the bottom of the the fifth inning, Congelosi drove her in with a triple to right field, and scored on Mya Hurley’s (Amherst, NY/Amherst) single to shortstop to give the Bengals a 3-0 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles were able to bring the tying run to the plate, before catcher Deme Kellogg (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) pounced on a grounder in front of the plate for the final out.

GAME TWO BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Golden Eagles scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead.
  • Buffalo State responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to regain the lead.
  • Kruse scored the tying run on a errant throw, and Kayla Wolinski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) came home two batters later on a wild pitch.
  • Schnitzer pitched out of trouble in the fifth inning thanks to a pair of catches by Sydney Shuta (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro) in deep right field.
  • Brockport knotted the score at 2-2 in the sixth inning on a pinch-hit RBI double to right center by Hannah Jacobs, but Kellogg threw out Jacobs trying to steal third to limit the damage.
  • With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the sixth after a pair of walks sandwiching a double by Kellogg, Wlostowski grounded out to first base to drive in the go-ahead run.
  • Castello followed with a single to second base to extend the Bengals’ lead.
  • Bielicki turned a double play in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory.

FOR THE FOES

  • Fiona Gibiser took the hard-luck loss in the opening game, allowing just three runs in a complete-game effort.
  • Amanda Blakely and Emma DeJesus each had a double for Brockport.
