Canisius redshirt-freshman guard Tahj Staveskie was once again honored for his performance on the hardwood, as he was named the Hercules Tires MAAC Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

This marks the first time a Canisius newcomer has been chosen as the league’s rookie of the week four-or more times in a season since Jacco Fritz earned the award four times in 2019-20.

In the Golden Griffins’ 69-68 road loss at Toledo Dec. 10, Staveskie matched a season-high with 19 points to lead all Canisius scorers. He also recorded six rebounds and a steal in the game against the Rockets. The Sandusky, Ohio native went 8-for-17 from the field against Toledo, hitting on 7-of-10 shots from inside the 3-point arc, and he also knocked down two free-throws in the game’s closing seconds.

One of three Griffs to start all nine games to date, Staveskie leads the team and ranks ninth in MAAC in scoring average at 13.7 points per game. He has scored 10-or more points seven times this season, and his 3.2 assists per game leads the Blue and Gold while ranking 11th in the conference.

Canisius will take a week off for final exams, and then return to action on Sunday, Dec. 18, when the Griffs travel to play at Penn State. Game time is set for 12 p.m., in State College, Pa., and the contest will be broadcast live on The Big 10 Network. The radio call can be heard exclusively on GoGriffs.com.
