Canisius freshman guard Lydia Gattozzi has been tabbed the MAAC Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Gattozzi scored a season-high 15 points in 23 minutes off the bench during a 69-60 loss to Duquesne last Wednesday. The Chardon, Ohio, native made six of her 12 field goal attempts, while going 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. She also tied her season high in rebounds (4) while recording her first multi-block performance, rejecting a pair of shot attempts from the Dukes.

So far in seven games this season, Gattozzi is averaging 6.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in just under 22 minutes of action per contest.

Monday’s announcement marked the first time a Canisius player has received a MAAC weekly award since Sara Hinriksdóttir during the 2018-19 season. Gattozzi is the first Golden Griffin player to earn Rookie of the Week distinctions since Danielle Sanderlin in 2017-18.

Canisius returns home to square off against Youngstown State on Wednesday. Tipoff between the Penguins and Griffs at the Koessler Athletic Center is slated for 7 p.m.
