Garcia Ramser and Sofia Lopez Acosta ReleaseCANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

On Friday, Canisius head volleyball coach Lenika Vazquez announced the additions of Garcia Ramser andSofia Lopez Acosta to the coaching staff for the 2019 season.

Rasmer comes to the Golden Griffins after spending last season as the graduate assistant for the Quincy University men’s volleyball program, while Lopez Acosta enters the coaching ranks following a historic senior season for which she was named the 2018-19 Canisius Female Athlete of the Year.

Both will serve as assistant coaches on Vazquez’s staff, as the Griffs look to improve upon a 2018 season that saw the program reach the MAAC Championship match for the first time in its history and had six players receive postseason honors from the conference.

While at Quincy, Ramser helped with practice plans, recruiting and video coordination among other tasks. Before that, Ramser was student manager for the Pittsburgh women’s volleyball team from 2014-18 and served as head coach of the Pitt men’s club volleyball team from 2016-18. With the men’s club team, Ramser led them to finishing ninth and 33rd nationally in his two seasons, winning the NCVA Men’s Division I Coach of the Year award in 2018.

Lopez Acosta, the 2018 MAAC Libero of the Year, moves from the court to the bench after a two-year run with the Blue and Gold that ended with her racking up 1,002 career digs, which ranks ninth all-time for a Griff, and four MAAC Libero of the Week honors. In her senior season, the Mexicali, Mexico native dug 577 balls, including 62 combined over two MAAC Championship contests, and earned selections to the All-MAAC Second Team, the MAAC All-Championship Team and the Division I All-ECAC Team.

Canisius opens the 2019 regular season on Aug. 30 at Sacramento State, while the team’s home opener is set for Oct. 5 against Saint Peter’s.
