BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Mid-American Conference released its preseason rankings and five Bulls made the list. Kyle Akins, Derek Spann, Bryan Lantry, Alex Smythe and Jake Gunning all made the preseason rankings.
Akins is ranked fourth at 125 lbs. The redshirt-senior went 22-10 overall, 10-4 in duals and 5-1 in MAC duals last year.
Spann is ranked fourth at 133 lbs. after redshirting last season. Spann wrestled at 125 lbs. as a true freshman, filling in for an injured Akins. This is his second season at 133 lbs.
After spending his first three seasons at 133 lbs., Lantry is making the move up to 141 lbs. for the upcoming campaign. He is ranked third in the preseason rankings.
Smythe is ranked fourth in the preseason rankings at 157 lbs. The Eden, NY native is back in the lineup after redshirting a season ago.
Finally, Gunning is ranked second in the heavyweight division. The 2017 MAC Champion, looks to rebound from last year’s fourth-place finish.
The 2018-19 season kicks off on Thursday night at Wisconsin.
