CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

An early goal by sophomore Luca Fahmer made the difference, as the Canisius women’s soccer team (1-1-0) earned its first victory of the season over Hampton (1-1-0) Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex. The game served as the home opener for the Golden Griffins.

In the game’s fifth minute, Fahmer took a lead pass from senior teammate Madeline Beaulieu to beat Hampton goalkeeper Maya Andrews for her first collegiate goal. That goal served to be more than enough for the Blue and Gold, as senior keeper Alana Rossi and the Canisius defense smothered Hampton’s offensive attack en route to the shutout victory. The shutout for Rossi is her 18th in a Canisius uniform, which is tops all-time in program history.

The Griffs ended the game with a 12-3 advantage in shots, with eight of those shots being on frame. The Lady Pirates had just one shot on goal, which came in the game’s opening half.

Head Coach Todd Clark‘s Postgame Comments
“We are very proud of the way that we can defend Demske. We always want people to feel like it is hard to play here. It was really important for us to get that early game-winner and enforce positive pressure throughout the rest of the contest. The game also served as a great opportunity to use the depth of our bench, which provided everyone some energy.”

Game Notes
• This marked the second all-time meeting between the two schools, with Canisius holding a 2-0-0 advantage in the series.
• The Griffs have now three-straight home openers and the team is 3-1-1 since 2015 in the first home game of the season.
• The goal for Fahmer is the first of her college career. She played all 18 games at Youngstown State in 2018, where she was credited with an assist.
• The assist for Beaulieu stands as her sixth career assist, with her last helper coming Oct. 15, 2018 against Delaware State.
