CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

A total of nine Canisius hockey student-athletes were recognized for their efforts in the classroom as they were named “Krampade All-American Scholars” for the 2018-19 season by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) on Tuesday.

To earn the honor, student-athletes must achieve a 3.60 GPA or higher in both semesters while playing in at least 40 percent of their team’s games. Exceptions to the 40 percent rule are made in the case of injury and for backup goaltenders.

“We are extremely proud of this group of student-athletes who have competed at the highest levels of the game on the ice and matched that performance in the classroom,” said AHCA executive director Joe Bertagna. “The sport demands a great deal from these athletes so it is a great statement they make, individually and collectively, with their ability to attain this level of academic achievement.”

Graduated seniors Cameron HeathAlex Jaeckle and Matt McLeod, sophomores Logan GestroBlake Wareham and Tucker Weppner, redshirt freshman David Baskerville and freshmen Lee Lapid and Kevin Obssuth were all recognized from Canisius.

Heath and McLeod were both chosen as All-American Scholars for the third consecutive season, while the other seven honorees were first-time selections.

All nine players were recently named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team, with Baskerville being named an AHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year selection for the second season in a row.
