BUFFALO STATE ATHLETICS
Former Buffalo State football player Khalil Sommerville (Buffalo/Bennett) has signed a professional contract to play in the inaugural season with the Salt Lake Stallions of the Alliance of American Football (AAF).
Sommerville played three seasons as a defensive lineman at Buffalo State from 2015-17, earning All-Empire 8 three times, including first team as a senior and second team as sophomore and junior. In 31 career games, he had 125 tackles, 32 for loss, 12 sacks, a forced fumble, and one blocked kick.
Sommerville will play for head coach Dennis Erickson, who previously served as the head coach for the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, as well as with the University of Miami where his teams won two national championships.
The AAF, founded by Charlie Ebersol and former Buffalo Bills general manager Bill Polian is entering its first season. The league consists of eight centrally owned and operated teams in Atlanta, Birmingham, Orlando, Memphis, Arizona, San Antonio, San Diego and Salt Lake.
The Stallions 10-game schedule will kick off on Feb. 10 at Arizona.
