BUFFALO, N.Y. — Senior swimmer Michael Shenal has been named the Canisius Student-Athlete of the Week. Shenal, who holds a 3.86 grade point average as a Chemistry Health Professional major, turned in a solid effort in the men’s swimming and diving program’s loss to St. Bonaventure on Nov. 10.

The Henrietta, N.Y., native teamed up with fellow senior Sean Carbary, junior Kenyon Winkky and sophomoreLucas Kennedy to win the 200-yard medley relay event. The senior also placed fifth in the 50-yard freestyle race with a mark of 22.15.

The Canisius athletic department has a strong tradition of success in the classroom, with 19 varsity programs recording a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the 2017-18 spring semester. Fifteen teams recorded a team GPA of 3.25 or higher, and the school’s 342 student-athletes combined to post a department grade point average of 3.26 in the spring session.

Additionally, last spring saw 22 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester. Those 22 student-athletes represent nine different teams. A total of 243 student-athletes hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, which breaks down to 71 percent of the College’s student-athlete population.

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action Dec. 1, when the Griffs host Binghamton. Meet time at the Burt Flickinger Center in Buffalo, N.Y., is set for 1 p.m.
