CORTLAND, N.Y. — The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) released its 2018 men’s soccer all-conference teams today, recognizing five Buffalo State players, including Theo Pencic (Oslo, Norway/Heltberg) and Robert Williamson (Fishkill/John Jay) who drew first team accolades. Pencic was also tabbed as the league’s Rookie of the Year.
August Finn (High Falls, NY/Rondout Valley) and Andreas Queen (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) were named to the second team, and Saleman Salim (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) garnered third team honors.
Pencic, a first-year striker from Oslo, Norway, finished the season with 11 goals in just 13 games played, leading the SUNYAC in goals-per-game at 0.85. Pencic netted four game-winning goals and tallied a pair of hat tricks in wins over Fredonia and Alfred University.
Williamson, a senior defender studying health and wellness, improved on second team honors last season. A team captain, Williamson was a force at both ends of the field, helping anchor a defense that had eight shutouts and conceded just 16 goals in 18 games. He also tallied four goals and an assist and led the team in minutes played with 1,666, 183 more than the next highest on the team.
Finn, a senior midfielder majoring in sociology, also is a two-time All-SUNYAC selection, earning third team honors last year. A key figure in the Bengals’ transition game, Finn added one goal and four assists in 16 games played.
Queen, a junior goalkeeper majoring in history, is another repeat honoree, earning first team distinction last season. He played in 13 games this season, posting five shutouts to go with a 0.76 goals against average and a .839 save percentage before missing the final three games of the season due to an injury.
Salim is a first-time All-SUNYAC honoree. The sophomore business major was a stalwart on the defensive line for the Bengals appearing in 17 games, helping the Bengals allow an average of just 9.9 shot attempts-per-game.
Buffalo State finished the season 11-5-2 overall, reaching double-digit wins for the fourth-consecutive season for the only time in school history. The Bengals also qualified for the SUNYAC playoffs for the fourth-straight season, posting a 5-3-1 mark in league play, before falling in the quarterfinals.
