UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS

LEWISTON, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team began the season on Saturday with a 5-2 dual win over Carnegie Mellon in a match that was played at Niagara University. Last season, Carnegie Mellon went 20-5, making it all the way to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

UB took two of the three matches in doubles beginning with a 6-2 win at first doubles from the duo of senior Chantal Martinez Blanco and freshman Nikoleta Antoniou-Karademitrou. Buffalo won the doubles point with a win in the tiebreaker at third doubles as senior Mercedes Losada Rubio and freshman Pia Schwarz won their match, 7-6 (3).
In singles action, Buffalo came away with wins in four of the six matches. Martinez Blanco won 6-2, 6-4 at first singles, while Antoniou-Karademitrou won at third singles, 7-5, 6-0. Schwarz won at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-0, while senior Sanjana Sudhir won at sixth singles, 6-1, 6-2.
UB was supposed to also face Niagara on Saturday, but that match has been postponed.
The Bulls will now head to the ITA Northeast Regionals, which begin on October 11 at Yale.
