Balanced goal scoring and timely offense helped the Canisius women’s lacrosse team issue Marist its first conference loss of the season, as the Golden Griffins defeated the Red Foxes, 13-12 on Wednesday. With the victory the Blue and Gold improved to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in MAAC action, while Marist fell to 7-5 and 4-1 in conference action.
 
Seven different Griffs tallied goals, as Canisius erased an early 3-0 deficit by outscoring Marist, 6-3, by halftime. Canisius rattled off six straight markers from the 24:40 mark on, receiving goals from Jen ReiningerBryar CummingsLauren Smolensky,Jourdan Roemer and  Allie Stewart.
 
Things tensed up in the second half as the two teams combined for 16 goals, trading markers throughout the frame.
 
With the score 13-11 with 7:57 remaining in the frame, Camille Renaud made it a one-goal game with seven minutes left, however the Golden Griffins defense stiffened up at the right time and a Rebecca VanLaekensave with third seconds left helped seal the victory.
 
Leading all scorers was Stewart who tallied four goals in the contest. Also recording a hat trick was Reininger with three. Cummings posted two goals while Roemer, Marissa Malvaso and Rachel Ryan all tallied one. Roemer chipped in a pair of assists to finish her day with three points.
 
For Marist Mehalick and Lauren Mazza each paced the team with three goals apiece, while Morgan Jaycox and Renaud, tallied two.
 
In what was expected to be a battle of two of the MAAC’s best goalkeepers, both VanLaeken and Delaney Galvin recorded over 10 saves. VanLaeken improved to 7-6 as she recorded 14 saves, while Galvin notched 11 saves in the losing effort.
 
Canisius edged Marist in shots with a 33-30 margin, while Marist controlled the draw circle to the tune of 15-12. The Griffs recorded more ground balls in the contest with 21, while the Red Foxes secured 17.
 
COACH DALEY POST GAME COMMENTS
“I thought today was a tremendous response from Sunday. We took a lot of time Monday and Tuesday to focus on ourselves and that really paid off for us. That focus showed in answering back when we needed to but also  in taking a lead and keeping it. We had a lot of people step and contribute and it was a total team win for us”

GAME NOTES
• With the win Canisius now trails Marist in the all-time series 16-12.
• Griffs are now 5-5 all-time when facing Marist at home.
• With her lone goal today, Roemer has now reached the 100 goal plateau for her career.
• Canisius is now 5-1 in one-goal contests.
• Stewart recorded her third career hat trick, while Reininger recorded her 17th.
• Reininger is now one point away from the 100-point mark for her career as a Golden Griffin.

The Blue and Gold continue a busy week on Saturday and Sunday as the team takes on MAAC foe Quinnipiac on Saturday in Hamden, Conn., Game time is set for 11 a.m. Meanwhile the team caps off its weekend in a non-conference matchup with No. 7 North Carolina at a neutral site in Syracuse, N.Y. The two teams square off at Christian Brothers Academy with a 11 a.m. start time.
