Cleveland State freshman Aliani Lorenzo scored her first two career goals 2:22 apart to help lead the visiting Vikings to a 2-0 win over Canisius Friday night at the Demske Sports Complex. The win moves Cleveland State to 1-2-0 on the year, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 0-3-0 with the loss.

After playing to a scoreless tie through the game’s first half and opening portion of the second stanza, Lorenzo put Cleveland State ahead in the game’s 62nd minute with a goal off a corner-kick assist from teammate Katie Bainbridge. Lorenzo capped the night’s scoring in the 64th minute, as she took a pass from teammate Stacie Morris and fired a shot from 25-yards out that beat Canisius goalkeeper Alana Rossi.

Canisius held a 13-9 edge in shots and the Griffs were granted six corner kicks against Cleveland State’s four, but Vikings’ goalkeeper Jamie Daniels was able to keep the Blue and Gold off the scoreboard with four saves. Rossi made three stops in goal for Canisius.

Coach Clark Postgame Comments
“Truth is, we have been in all three games this season and we’ve probably won 98 percent of those three games statistically. Unfortunately, the scoreboard hasn’t reflected how well we’ve played at times, and at the end of the day, the only stat that counts is the final score.”

“We’ll take all our great efforts and great moments so far and be excited about them, but we’re having players check out for just a few moments, and the errors that follow have really cost us. I’ll take responsibility for that as the coach. At the end of the day, we have to figure out how to win as a team.”

“The best thing about the early season schedule is that you get another crack at it quickly. We’ll work to identify our mistakes and we’re going to correct those errors.”
