KENT, Ohio — After playing a scoreless first half, the host Kent State Golden Flashes scored three times in the game’s final 45 minutes to record a 3-0 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins Sunday afternoon at Zoeller Field in Kent Ohio. The win moves Kent State to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Griffs slipped to 0-2-0 with the loss.

Kent State, the preseason favorite to win the Mid-American Conference title, opened the scoring in the game’s 60th minute after Kristen Brots scored her first marker of the 2016 season off an assist from Jaime Eiben and Hayden Pascoe. The Golden Flashes extended their lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute on a goal by Jenna Hellstrom, and then Pascoe closed out the scoring in the 73rd minute with her first goal of the season.

Kent State outshot the Griffs 19-10, and the Golden Flashes were credited with 10 corner kicks against Canisius’ six. Freshman goalkeeper Alana Rossi made seven saves for the Blue and Gold in 84:19 minutes of action, with junior Katie Aldrich earning her first save in a Canisius uniform in the contest’s final 5:41.

“We played them even in the first half, I can honestly say the game was slight to our advantage. Then in the second half, we made some mistakes in some areas that we just should not, and like a good team, Kent State punished us for those mistakes.”

“Kent State is a very, very good team. They lost their opener Friday [at Ohio State], but they are picked to win the Mid-American Conference and I can honestly say that is one of the better teams we’ll see all season.”

“It’s time to turn the page and get ready for Cleveland State at home. Again today, we showed some very good things, but again, the little things got us in the end.”
